How I Became a Hat Designer — And What Most People Don’t Know About Handmade Hat Design
Share
I didn’t start as a milliner. My roots are in fine art and visual composition — trained in Spain, I spent years studying how shapes, shadows, and human movement create emotional resonance. I never imagined these same principles would later guide my process for designing custom handmade hats.
But hats, I realized, are one of the few objects that sit at the intersection of architecture and identity.
🎨 My Journey: How I Became a Hat Designer
The transition into hat design happened slowly — almost organically.
During my travels, I became fascinated by how different cultures express personality and purpose through headwear — not just in fashion, but in ritual, ceremony, and resistance. I started collecting vintage hats, deconstructing them, and learning how lines, tension, and pressure created form.
This process — part curiosity, part obsession — eventually led me to start OTRHATS, named after the Spanish word otra, meaning “another.”
To me, hats aren’t just decorative. They are a way to become another version of yourself.
Every hat I design begins with a question:
Who might this person become when they wear this?
🧵 What Most People Don’t Realize About Hat Design
If you ask most people, “What makes a good hat?” you might hear answers like: stylish, fits well, or on trend.
But designing truly transformative headwear is about so much more than that.
Here’s what I wish more people knew about artisan hat design:
Hats shape identity — Unlike most garments, hats sit on the most visible part of your body. They affect the way others see you, and the way you see yourself — instantly.
It’s not about trend — Great hat design requires understanding:
-
- Form: How crown depth, brim width, and silhouette change your proportions, posture, and presence.
- Material behavior: How natural straw contracts with humidity, or wool expands with heat.
- Cultural perception: How a wide-brim fedora feels bold in one context and quietly confident in another.
- Every detail matters: From the curve of a teardrop crown to the subtle tilt angle that turns quiet confidence into magnetic charm.
When I design hats, I’m not chasing fast fashion trends. I’m crafting meaningful accessories that hold emotional and visual weight.
👒 Inside the OTRHATS Studio: Where Each Hat Tells a Story
At OTRHATS, we build more than hats. We create tools for transformation.
In our design process, we constantly balance:
-
- Structure vs. softness
- History vs. modernity
- Simplicity vs. symbolism
Every OTRHATS design is rooted in timeless hat craftsmanship, yet meant for the modern soul.
We make hats for:
-
- Travel
- Rituals and milestones
-
Everyday reinvention
Whether it’s a lightweight straw hat for summer or a bold wool fedora for fall, our goal is always the same:
To help you become “OTRA” — your other self.
🧠 Final Note: Why Hats Still Matter in the Modern Fashion World
We live in a fast-paced, fast-fashion world. But hats resist that tempo.
They ask us to pause, to be seen — and sometimes, to see ourselves differently.
Hats are not just worn — they are inhabited.
They hold space. They change posture. They speak before you do
As a designer, I don’t create hats to impress — I design them to empower.
If more people understood the emotional, cultural, and structural weight behind a truly well-made hat,
they’d never settle for something mass-produced again.
